      Natural Areas

Preserving natural areas and maintaining species balance to protect life on the planet

This is a crucial area of focus, dedicated to preserving flora and fauna and maintaining a balanced, healthy environment. It also serves as a space for scientific research, environmental studies, and educational initiatives.

      Conservation
      units

We support the creation and implementation of new Conservation Units (UCs) to protect natural ecosystems and preserve their species as a whole.

These UCs play a crucial role in safeguarding natural areas across the country, contributing to the preservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in all Brazilian biomes. Maintaining these areas provides numerous benefits to society, particularly through vital ecosystem services such as protecting springs and water sources, ensuring quality of water resources for communities, sequestering carbon, and safeguarding endemic and endangered species. Additionally, these efforts help prevent landslides and other natural disasters.

Amid the extreme impacts of climate change, it is urgent to ensure the existence and strengthening of these areas, which play a direct role in protecting water sources, securing water supplies, and promoting the resilience of coastal and marine zones.

      Photo: José Paiva
      Photo: Grupo Boticário

Additionally, conserving these areas is essential for advancing scientific research, fostering environmental education, and supporting sustainable tourism—activities that generate both social and economic benefits for local communities.

Despite progress in establishing conservation units, the current coverage is still insufficient to fully protect the ecosystem services these areas offer.

To support improved legislation and the effective application of policies, as well as to advance the expansion, implementation, and management of the National System of Conservation Units, the Foundation focuses on increasing and influencing the flow of financial resources to the system—particularly through the Environmental Compensation mechanism. This work contributes to the strengthening of these protected areas.

The importance of conserving natural vegetation in all ecosystems

Brazil maintains 497 million hectares of native forests, making it the country with the greatest diversity of forest species—more than 9,000 in total. Brazil is home to 12% of the world’s forests.

However, the same report highlights that Brazil has been the country with the highest forest loss over the past decade, losing 1.5 million hectares annually.

Globally, 10 million hectares of forest are lost each year, resulting in a significant reduction in the forest’s ability to absorb carbon dioxide (CO2). As a consequence, between 12% and 20% of global CO2 emissions are no longer absorbed by forests and are instead released directly into the atmosphere.

In addition to forests, other ecosystems, like the Cerrado, also need protection through the creation and implementation of Conservation Units (UCs) and deserve greater attention from society.

Known as the savannah with the richest biodiversity in the world, the Brazilian Cerrado covers about 22% of the country’s territory. It is home to stunning landscapes and vital water resources, supplying 70% of the nation’s water.

However, according to an assessment by the National Institute for Space Research (INPE), deforestation in the Cerrado has been increasing rapidly since 2019. In 2023, the biome lost 11 thousand km², equivalent to seven times the size of the city of São Paulo.

The initiatives and efforts of the Boticário Group Foundation on this issue increasingly aim to combat the loss of natural vegetation in the Cerrado and other biomes, prevent and fight fires, and establish conservation areas. These actions are essential for helping Brazil meet its climate commitments and minimize environmental disasters.

      Water and water security

Water is essential for the life of all species

Conserving water is essential for the future. It supports ecosystems and ensures the production of food and energy. Our health and our future depend on this resource.

12% of all fresh surface water on the planet is in Brazil

80% of the water used in energy generation comes from conservation units

      Even so,

33 million Brazilians do not have access to treated water.

40% of water availability in the main Brazilian river basins is at risk of being reduced by 2040.

Source: National Water and Sanitation Agency (ANA)

Protecting water, a vital resource for life, is a key focus of the Boticário Group Foundation. We believe that water security is achieved through a range of actions, from environmental conservation to supporting a regenerative economy.

In 2016, we introduced Oasis, an innovative solution that used a Payment for Environmental Services (PES) mechanism to promote the conservation of natural areas. The initiative has successfully protected natural areas with springs covering the equivalent of 21,000 soccer fields, benefiting over 8 million people.

To amplify our impact, we launched the Viva Água movement in 2019—a collaborative effort that brings together companies, government agencies, and civil society to ensure water security. The Viva Água movement operates in two regions:

      • Miringuava River Basin (PR): The goal here is to restore 650 hectares by 2030, ensuring water conservation for 500,000 people.
      • Guanabara Bay (RJ): This initiative has positively impacted 150,000 hectares and supported 50 local businesses, benefiting more than 11 million people both directly and indirectly.

Call for Applications for Environmental Communication Ocean Connection

In 2021, in partnership with UNESCO, we launched the Environmental Communication Ocean Connection Call to encourage the production of high-quality journalistic content on ocean sustainability. This initiative invited press professionals from across Brazil to submit proposals for reports on ocean-related topics. Over four editions, 20 journalistic works were produced with the support provided through the call. Check out some of the supported works:

      Coastal
      protection

Did you know that the conservation and restoration of coastal and marine environments are considered Nature-Based Solutions (NBS)? Ecosystems like mangroves, coral reefs, restingas (coastal vegetation), and dunes are powerful natural defenses. They help reduce the force of waves and tides, combat coastal erosion, and serve as habitats and food sources for a significant portion of marine biodiversity.

With the rise in extreme weather events driven by climate change, these natural solutions are key to adapting coastal cities, where about 55% of the Brazilian population lives. Increasing coastal resilience is one of the focus areas of the Boticário Group Foundation.

      Climate and adaptation

A more resilient society, better prepared to face the impacts of climate change.

We work to help society adapt to the effects of climate change and reduce the impact of extreme weather events on people’s daily lives. Nature-Based Solutions are powerful allies in this process.

      Climate change

      Challenge that requires commitment.

We are facing an unprecedented climate crisis: never before have we been exposed to such high average temperatures, and the pace of environmental changes is accelerating and intensifying. With global warming driven by human activity, the frequency and severity of extreme weather events—such as storms, floods, landslides, and droughts—are increasing. These events lead to heatwaves, droughts, and wildfires, threatening numerous species and natural ecosystems.

In response to this urgent need for action, the Boticário Group Foundation is working to build a more resilient future by promoting socio-environmental benefits. Our efforts are realized through the conservation of natural areas, the protection of water sources and coastal marine zones, the generation of knowledge and engagement, and the support of innovative solutions and impactful businesses across the country.

      Nature-based Solutions

Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) are actions that leverage ecosystem services to deliver benefits for human well-being, while simultaneously strengthening the economy and conserving biodiversity. Therefore, we promote the adoption of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) in Brazil as a means to tackle the challenges of climate change and foster a prosperous, resilient future.

We focus on protecting water sources and enhancing the resilience of coastal and marine zones, utilizing NBS strategies to:

      Influence legal and regulatory instruments.

Raise awareness and engage financiers and promoters of urban infrastructure (urban planners).

Expand knowledge and engagement for NBS.

Support the development and accelerate the implementation of NBS projects.

For 91% of Brazilians, climate change is important or especially important. The survey also shows that 98% of respondents would like to have more nature in their cities.

Nature as a solution to society’s biggest challenges

Nature-inspired actions that deliver environmental, social and economic benefits.

      Conservation is
      everyone’s mission

Since its creation, the Foundation has provided financial support to projects focused on nature conservation.

Initially, the process relied on public notices, but we eventually recognized that conserving nature also required innovative projects.

As we evolved alongside new technologies, business models, connections, and co-creation opportunities, the Boticário Group Foundation has broadened society’s involvement in identifying challenges and developing solutions for the conservation of Brazilian nature.

      Initiatives that
      generate impact

In 2020, Teia de Soluções (Web of Solutions) was launched to provide financial support for initiatives focused on nature conservation. Through these efforts, we also train and enhance businesses by sharing knowledge and practices from various sectors, helping them achieve better results for the environmental cause.

As a result, we have become a reference for developing numerous projects, including the Web of Solutions, new sustainable business proposals, and the Entrepreneurial Nature Program.

      business opportunity

Our goal is to engage investors, promoters, intermediaries, and key players within impact investment ecosystems by presenting a new business model.

So, what exactly is a business with a positive impact on biodiversity conservation?

These are enterprises that are intentionally focused on addressing a socio-environmental issue through their core activities (whether through their products, services, or operational methods). They operate within the market economy, with a business model aimed at generating financial returns, while also committed to measuring the impact they create.
They promote income through processes such as:

      • Sustainable tourism.
      • Sustainable fishing, aquaculture and mariculture.
