Nature-Based Solutions

Nature-Based Solutions for a future that begins today

The city we want to live in!

Imagine more resilient and sustainable cities! With Nature-Based Solutions (NBS), actions that harness natural processes and ecosystems to address the most pressing challenges of our time, we can combat extreme heat, reduce flooding, and improve the quality of both water and air.

This approach benefits not only biodiversity but also social and economic development. When combined with Green Infrastructure and Ecosystem-Based Adaptation (EbA), NBS helps us build a more comfortable and secure future for everyone.

Green Infrastructure promotes sustainable urban planning by integrating ecosystem services and replacing or complementing conventional infrastructure in areas such as sanitation, transportation, and energy.

Ecosystem-Based Adaptation (EbA), on the other hand, focuses on people. It uses biodiversity and ecosystem services as part of broader adaptation strategies to help communities cope with the adverse impacts of climate change.

Did you know that nature can be our greatest ally in the fight against climate change?

91% of Brazilians consider climate change an important issue.

80% are concerned about climate change.

69% know someone who has already been affected by climate change.

65% have already been affected by floods and inundations.

Solution

The Nature Solution Program aims to promote climate resilience in Brazilian municipalities through the implementation of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS). The program is structured around four key pillars: education and engagement, legal frameworks, financial coordination, and project incubation.

Its comprehensive approach seeks to overcome the barriers to large-scale NBS implementation by fostering a supportive ecosystem — from spreading awareness and developing projects to securing funding and creating the regulatory conditions needed to expand NBS initiatives across Brazilian cities.

The program also works to attract public and private investment in NBS, engage financial institutions, and co-create innovative financing mechanisms. In addition, it raises public awareness of the vital role biotechnology plays in advancing sustainability, climate resilience, and social justice.

The Nature Solutions Project Incubator is an initiative of the Boticário Group Foundation aimed at expanding the implementation of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) in Brazil.

The first edition, running from 2025 to 2026, seeks to accelerate the financing of urban development and climate adaptation projects that integrate NBS. It does so by engaging participating cities, providing technical support, and facilitating connections with potential funders.

  • Expected results: Up to 30 concept notes prepared for presentation to potential investors during a high-level event in November in Rio de Janeiro.
  • Status: Registration is now open and will close on September 8, 2025.
  • Format: A public call for the selection of up to 30 urban infrastructure projects incorporating NBS.

NATURE-BASED SOLUTIONS

Green streets

Urban afforestation refers to the planting and maintenance of trees in public and private areas and plays a vital role in helping cities adapt to climate change.

Ecological corridors

These green connections link vegetation fragments, allowing biodiversity to circulate while preventing the silting of springs, streams, and other water sources.

Linear parks

Linear areas planted with native vegetation help prevent erosion and river silting, reduce flooding, and connect parks and green spaces throughout the city.

Multifunctional parks and squares

Integrated spaces that combine several Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) to provide multiple benefits — from flood control and biodiversity conservation to improved environmental quality.

Coastal protection

Conserving and restoring coastal and marine environments strengthens natural barriers against the main adverse effects of climate change.

Slope restoration

These interventions stabilize soil and prevent erosion, while also generating positive social impacts by reducing the vulnerability of communities in high-risk areas.

Stormwater ponds or retention basins

By using natural elements such as vegetation, soil, and topography, these systems manage and filter rainwater runoff, allowing it to drain gradually and sustainably.

A NATURE BASED SOLUTION
MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:

Source: International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)

01

First, it is essential to define both the problem and the proposed solution.

02

Projects should be designed in line with the economic, social, and ecological context of the challenge the NBS aims to address.

03

Every NBS must improve or maintain the quality of the ecosystem in which it is implemented.

04

The NBS must be economically viable.

05

The NBS should be based on inclusive, transparent, and empowering governance processes.

06

The ability to deliver multiple benefits simultaneously is a key attribute of an effective NBS.

07

The NBS should be designed using scientific evidence and informed by local knowledge.

08

The NBS must be sustainable in the long term and integrated within an appropriate legal framework.
